Johannesburg, Monday, 21 September 2026 – The Fuels Industry Association of South Africa welcomes the sentencing of an individual convicted of tampering with critical fuel pipeline infrastructure and stealing approximately 40,000 litres of fuel, valued at R1.069 million, from the Transnet Pipelines network. The sentence sends a clear message that criminals targeting South Africa’s fuel supply chain will be held accountable, and face the consequences of the law.
Fuel theft and the illegal interference with pipeline infrastructure pose significant risks to public safety, environmental protection, energy security, and the reliable supply of fuel across the country. Beyond the substantial financial losses incurred, such acts threaten the efficient transportation of fuel products that are essential to the functioning of South Africa’s economy.
The Association believes the outcome of this case strengthens the protection of critical energy infrastructure and supports ongoing efforts to combat fuel-related crime. The successful prosecution demonstrates the importance of coordinated action between, security operators, law enforcement agencies, and prosecutorial authorities in safeguarding national infrastructure.
The Fuels Industry Association maintains that criminal activity has no place within South Africa’s fuels value chain. Effective law enforcement and meaningful penalties are vital to deterring criminal behaviour, and by reducing criminal interference along pipeline routes contributes to the stability and reliability of pipeline operations, helping to ensure the secure and uninterrupted transportation of fuel products to businesses and consumers across the country.
The Fuels Industry Association commends all stakeholders involved in protecting South Africa’s fuel infrastructure and securing this successful prosecution. Continued vigilance and collaboration remain essential to safeguarding the integrity of the country’s fuel supply network.
