Johannesburg, Friday, 28 August 2026 – The Fuels Industry Association of South Africa (FIASA) is closely monitoring the fuel supply implications arising from the unplanned shutdown at the Natref refinery.

At present, there are no fuel shortages in the market, including jet fuel, and supply to consumers continues uninterrupted.

Although the Natref outage will reduce domestic production of certain fuel products, the industry has moved swiftly to mitigate the impact through established security-of-supply measures. Imported replacement volumes have been secured, and fuel suppliers are coordinating logistics arrangements to maintain market supply. These arrangements include imports, coastal product movements, rail solutions and stock management measures. Fuel suppliers are also consolidating short- and medium-term supply plans to support coordinated industry and government planning.

Regarding aviation fuel, imported Jet A-1 volumes are already positioned in Durban and are being integrated into industry supply plans. Based on the current forecasts and replenishment schedules, the industry does not expect jet fuel shortages at OR Tambo International Airport. We remain confident in the industry’s ability to meet anticipated demand.

FIASA members are working closely with the relevant government departments, airport stakeholders and fuel suppliers to monitor stock levels, coordinate supply movements and address any operational constraints. Engagement with SARS forms part of the measures required to facilitate the timely movement of imported fuel products.

There is currently no need for consumers or businesses to alter their purchasing behaviour. The industry remains focused on maintaining continuity of supply and minimising potential disruption to the economy, transport sector and aviation operations.

FIASA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as additional information becomes available.
