Economic Contribution

The oil industry (mainly Fuels Industry Association members) contributed 3.0% to RSA’s 2022 GDP (direct contribution). South Africa's liquid fuel demand currently exceeds refinery production, making it a net importer. Supplies 17% of South Africa’s primary energy needs through annual sales of 24.5 billion litres of liquid fuels.

South Africa produces 15% of its liquid fuel needs from crude oil, 14% from coal and gas. Proven crude oil and gas reserves are limited so feedstock is imported, whereas the country has large coal deposits.

Transport

4 ports equipped for crude imports with approx. 80% through the SBM at Durban; 7 ports equipped for loading and discharging liquid bulk. Pipelines transport >80% of all refined products to the inland market; >70% of all jet fuel required at OR Tambo International Airport, 100% of the crude requirements. Well established rail and road networks for fuel distribution to end customers.

The Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for ensuring the secure and sustainable provision of energy for social-economic development. Significant pubic entities include the Central Energy Fund and subsidiaries (PetroSa; SFF); whilst NERSA acts as the national energy regulator.
